The actor talks Dex’s past on GH.

Outside of being Joss’s beau and Sonny’s right-hand man, we haven’t really learned much about Dex on General Hospital. Recently, though, the show handed his portrayer, Evan Hofer, some material that explored his character’s past. Soap Hub caught up with Hofer on the red carpet at the Daytime Emmys, and we asked him to expound on Dex’s drama.

Evan Hofer: All About Dex

“I think it’s really cool to finally see Dex and his past because we haven’t learned a lot about his past because he’s [been] very tight-lipped about it,” Hofer says. The reason? “I think he feels a lot of shame and pain around it. He wants to be this new version of himself that he’s created with this father figure he has in Sonny [Maurice Benard] and this love with Joss [Eden McCoy] and these feelings that he’s never had.”

There’s an old saying that you can run from your past, but you can’t really hide from it. That’s an adage that Hofer feels to which his character subscribes. “Dex is very worried that that history is going to bleed into this and kind of ruin his new life,” the actor theorizes.

Dex shared with Joss that his dad wasn’t the nicest guy to his mother (to say the least!), and he often faced torment from his brothers. “I think Dex is the youngest,” Hofer says. “There is some family building they can do.”

As far as the abuse in Dex’s past, Hofer says, “It sounds very Harry Potter to me — living under the staircase and being beaten up.” Now that we know Dex has parents and siblings (read more about that here), would Hofer like to see them introduced onto the canvas? “I would love to see that happen because you [then] get to see new layers to characters,” he says. “That’s what’s so beautiful about daytime. This new side can be developed. We have such fantastic writers. Every day is exciting.” You can watch the entire interview below.
