Ha, you thought the headline said Criminal Minds, didn’t ya?

No, Criminal Minds and Homeland alum Mandy Patinkin is set to guest-star in a pair of episodes of Brilliant Minds, NBC‘s new medical drama premiering Monday, Sept 23 at 10/9c.

Inspired by the life and work of world-famous author and physician Oliver Sacks, Brilliant Minds follows Dr. Oliver Wolf (played by Heroes‘ Zachary Quinto), a revolutionary, larger-than-life neurologist, and his team of interns at the fictional Bronx General Hospital “as they explore the last great frontier – the human mind – while grappling with their own relationships and mental health.”

The series’ cast also includes Tamberla Perry (The Good Fight), Ashleigh LaThrop (The Kom insky Method), Alex MacNicoll (13 Reasons Why), Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II (All American), Teddy Sears (The Flash) and Donna Murphy (The Gilded Age).

As announced on Sunday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Emmy winner Patinkin will appear in two episodes as an esteemed doctor who joins the staff of Bronx General Hospital, shaking up the dynamic of the doctors. “Bringing his own unconventional methods to the workplace, his affinity for house calls and long-standing patient relationships wins the respect of our lead, Dr. Wolf,” says the official character description, “and fosters a mentor-like relationship between the two men.”

In other Brilliant Minds guest casting, Steve Howey (Shameless) will play a rugged motorcycle mechanic who comes to Dr. Wolf with signs of memory loss and an accidental gunshot wound. As the severity of his condition is uncovered, he is forced to make a heartbreaking decision that will forever change his life and the lives of his loved ones.

As previously revealed in the medical drama’s trailer, Tony Award winner André De Shields guest-stars in the pilot as an Alzheimer’s patient whom Dr. Wolf is determined to help reconnect with his family.
