Mark Harmon, Sean Harmon Talk About ‘NCIS: Origins,’ Spinoff Replacing ‘Hawaii’ Time Slot

In the Fall of 2024, CBS is launching the big Mothership spinoff prequel, NCIS: Origins. This new series that has been affectionately nicknamed “Young Gibbs.” Mark Harmon and his son Sean Harmon created Origins, based on Sean’s idea. Moreover, this is the series that has taken the recently canceled Hawaii time slot. Therefore CBS has some high expectations for this series to be a great success.

When CBS unveiled the Fall schedule, Mark, and Sean gave an interview. What did they have to say about the series?

On Thursday, Mark and Sean Harmon spoke to ET about the upcoming NCIS prequel spinoff Origins. Firstly, they were shared how this will be very different from the OG. Mark pointed out, “It’s all going to be a time that we haven’t traveled before. It’s 1990, so it’s something we’re looking forward to.” Then he added, “It will be different.”

As for Sean Harmon, who came up with this idea, he shared that this was a project with years in the making. “This is an idea we worked on for a long time and just really really to finally be at this point in the process.” He then shared how his father had something to do with his own character. “I like to think he made me the man I am today.” He added how this new story is “pretty special.” He is happy to be given this opportunity.

New Spinoff Prequel Is From A ‘Different Time’

Mark Harmon will be narrating NCIS: Origins. In addition, there will be some Easter eggs for those long-time fans who have kept up with all of the stories. However, there will be some major differences between this spinoff prequel and the OG. That is because of the era. This series takes place in 1990. “It’s a different time. The show’s going to be different. The cast we got is different and it feels good at this moment, but we still have a lot of work to do.”

Portraying the younger Gibbs is Austin Stowell. In addition, Kyle Schmid will play Mike Franks, Gibbs’ mentor. Also, Mariel Molino is Special Agent Lala Dominguez who has a darker sort of humor. Also, Tyla Abercrombie portrays Field Operations Support Officer Mary Jo Sullivan. She is the mama bear who keeps track of all that happens in the office.

NCIS: Origins has replaced NCIS: Hawaii. This series will now take over the time slot. It will air on Monday nights at 10 p.m., Eastern, on CBS.
