What’s Next For Blue Bloods? CBS Studio President Teases Future Plans

While CBS continues on its path to end BLUE BLOODS this fall, the studio’s president, David Stapf, hinted that some of the characters may return in the future.

“We don’t have anything that’s going to be in development soon but it’s a brand, a title and a show that is beloved,” Stapf told Deadline. “We’ve got to get it right so we’re taking our time and trying to figure out [a new show]. What is the next iteration of BLUE BLOODS? We have a whole season to go where we intend to celebrate it all season long as to how good that show is, so there’s still time for us to figure that out.”

Ideas for several spinoffs to the long-running show have been floated, including a series that places Donnie Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan, at the center. However, CBS has yet to make any official announcement and they appear to be continuing the brainstorming process.

Nonetheless, as Stapf alluded to, fans of BLUE BLOODS still have more new episodes to look forward to this fall as the final eight episodes of the series bring a bittersweet ending to the show.

Despite BLUE BLOODS reigning as one of the most popular shows on TV, CBS was forced to cancel the series due to rising costs. Even with all the main actors agreeing to a 25% pay cut in March 2023, the network was only able to renew for one final season as it searched for places to save money.

To further cut costs, Season 14 was split between the spring and the fall, with the first 10 episodes starting the year and the final eight releasing after the summer. In June, the cast finished filming the final shots for the series — a sad milestone for their careers.

The cast of BLUE BLOODS gathered for one final day of filming; a momentous and sorrowful occasion.

“Last day of BLUE BLOODS. Not sure I have the words to describe how I feel about today, or the last 14 years on this special BLUE BLOODS journey, but I do know how incredibly thankful I am for every moment of it,” Donnie Wahlberg wrote on Instagram. “To the cast, the crew, the guests cast, every background actor, writer, producer and every member of every single dept – thank you.

“To the people of New York, in every neighborhood and borough, thank you for always showing your love,” he continued. “The to NYPD, thank you for your support and sacrifice, I hope we did you proud. Lastly, to my fans, and the fans of this show. We don’t make it 14 days (never mind 14 years) without you! Your love and support for this show has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Thank you.”
